Hemp products are becoming increasingly available around the country. For whole food enthusiasts who already understand the makeup and benefits of these products, this is great news. But for the rest of us, it can all feel a bit intimidating. Never fear, with a little bit of know-how, our Pams Superfoods Hemp Range will become healthy must-haves in your pantry.
With a rich nutritional makeup and a source of plant-based goodness, hemp products are commonly used for health foods and body care products. Take hemp oil for example. Cold pressed and extracted from hemp seeds, it’s an excellent addition to food, but it’s also amazing for your skin. Rich in omega 3 and antioxidants, it can be used as a moisturizer or a cleanser, and to treat skin conditions such as rashes and acne.
Our Pams Superfoods Hemp Range of oil, protein, flour and hulled seeds are completely gluten free and plant based. They contain protein and omega 3 as well as 9 essential amino acids. Our hemp protein and flour are also sources of fibre.
Here are a few ideas for how you can add them to your repertoire and make the most of the natural nutrition and delicious flavours they can bring. But first, one final tip for cooking: hemp products are best suited to low temperature uses, as omega 3 fatty acids break down at high temperatures. So keep it cool!
Dips and dressings
Hemp oil has a subtle nutty flavour and works great as a simple salad dressing or blended to make dips such as hummus and pesto. Hemp seeds have a similar flavour so can add delicious crunch to your recipes too.
Start by trying out our fresh and zingy salad dressing. Simply blend together a ¼ cup of Pams Superfoods Hemp Seed Oil, the juice of ½ a lemon, a clove of garlic, a handful of soft herbs (e.g. basil, parsley, mint), and some salt and pepper. You can even try adding this to our nourish bowl with lots of hemp seeds on top for a quick and easy lunch.
You can also use similar ingredients to make a delicious dip. In a blender or food processor add a handful of basil, ½ a packet of Pams Pine Nuts, 2 Tbsp of Pams Superfoods Hulled Hemp Seeds, 1 clove of garlic, the juice of ½ a lemon, 4 Tbsp Pams Superfoods Hemp Oil and season with pepper and loads of salt. Take it out of the blender and stir through another finely chopped handful of basil and a lug of hemp oil.
Hemp protein is a great alternative to whey protein powder. Our Pams Superfoods Hemp Seed Protein has a subtle nutty flavour and 11g protein in every 2 ½ Tbsp, so it’s a great addition to your morning or post work out smoothie or shake. Adding hulled hemp seeds are also a good way to give an extra protein boost.
Our hemp choc nut smoothie is a good place to start. Just mix 1 Tbsp each of Pams Superfoods Hemp Seed Protein, Pams Superfoods Hulled Hemp Seeds, Pams Almond Butter, Pams Finest Pure Canadian Maple Syrup and Pams Superfoods Cacao in a blender with 1 frozen banana and some milk of your choice.
Hemp flour is a healthy, gluten free alternative for wheat flour. A couple of tips before you start using it: hemp flour is quite dense, so it’s often worth mixing it with another flour 1:1 to lighten it up for baking. Also, hemp flour doesn’t rise, so should be incorporated with a leavening agent such as baking powder when used in cakes or breads.
